Sumant Sinha is a prominent Indian entrepreneur and renewable energy leader. He is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of ReNew, one of the world’s leading clean energy companies which is listed on Nasdaq.

Sumant is a first-generation entrepreneur and under his leadership, ReNew currently has a portfolio of 14 GW of wind and solar power capacity, with more than 8 GW already commissioned. The company contributes almost 2% to India’s power generation capacity and helps avoid 1.1% of the emissions from the power sector. ReNew is among the very few global companies that provides end-to-end solutions across the decarbonisation spectrum including renewable energy, energy storage, green hydrogen and carbon credits - areas that are integral to addressing climate change.

Prior to founding ReNew, Sumant had a decade-long career in investment banking where he worked with Citibank and the ING Group in the US and UK. He returned to India in 2002 and joined the Aditya Birla Group, a leading Indian business conglomerate, as the Chief Financial Officer. He helped establish Aditya Birla Retail as its first Chief Executive Officer before joining Suzlon, then the world’s fifth largest wind turbine maker, as its Chief Operating Officer.

Sumant has been a vocal advocate globally for clean energy policies and the need to transition to a low- carbon economy. Sumant chairs the Advisory Board of Global Wind Energy Council and is a Board Member of the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI). He is Co-chair of the World Economic Forum Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders India and is the Founding Member of the First Movers Coalition. During 2022-23, he served as the president of ASSOCHAM, one of the biggest industry chambers in India.

Sumant is a regular speaker at various international fora such as the World Economic Forum, UNFCCC COP, Climate Week NY, CERA Week, and leading global universities. He has written more than 150 opinion pieces on climate change, renewable energy and sustainable economic growth. Sumant is the author of Fossil Free: Reimagining Clean Energy in a Carbon Constrained World, a book about decarbonising the world.

Sumant has been the recipient of the 2022 USISPF Global Leadership Award, the `Economic Times Entrepreneur of the Year Award’, and `EY Entrepreneur of the Year’. He is the first Indian business leader to be recognized as an SDG Pioneer by the United Nations.

Sumant holds a diploma in business management from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and a B. Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He also holds a Master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia University and is also a qualified Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
